Day lily, Peony and Hosta Bed

The bed of Rhododendrons under the hickory tree was planted in 1978. Three years earlier an area on the left side of the hill going down to the gazebo and ultimately to the fish pond was cleared to make room for perennial flower beds and a vegetable garden. Both would need a lot of sun and so were placed on the left side where the plants would enjoy the sun for more of the day.
From 1985 to 1987 those two beds, the perennials and vegetable garden were changed over to the present beds of hosta, peony and day lilies. The traditional perennial bed and vegetable gardens required more maintenance than anyone had time for.
In 1991, the bed consisting of standard yellow day lilies were transplanted to one of the children’s house and a more varied bed was planted in it’s stead. The new day lily bed contained many different colors of day lilies as well as multicolored star-gazer and star-thrower varieties.
The outsides of the bed were still lined with lush and full variegated hosta which produced tall purple flowers each spring and a ‘road’ of variegated vegetation all summer and fall. It was at the southern and down hill end of this bed where the gazebo garden and gathering place began.
